Every year, millions of French people change their homes. Organizing a smooth move requires handling logistical, administrative, and financial tasks simultaneously, some of which are subject to legal deadlines. The regulatory framework (updating the registration certificate, rental notice, contract transfers) imposes a precise timeline, while the coverage of expenses varies depending on whether the move is chosen or mandated by the employer.

Move mandated by a job transfer: expenses covered by the employer and public assistance

When a move results from a job transfer or a new job, the question of financing arises differently. Not all employers cover the same expenses, and public assistance is targeted at specific profiles.

From the employer’s side, coverage depends on the collective agreement, company agreement, or individual contract. Some companies reimburse the transportation of furniture and agency fees, while others provide a flat-rate allowance. Nothing is automatic: you must request in writing the details of eligible expenses before signing a moving quote.

Public assistance does not always cover the mover’s bill. The moving allowance from the CAF, for example, is reserved for large families under certain income conditions. France Travail (formerly Pôle emploi) can grant mobility assistance for job seekers who take a job far away, but its amount and criteria vary depending on the situation.

In a mobility project, it is relevant to estimate a mortgage with Smart PAP to calibrate your overall budget before committing to a new home.

There is no general legal leave for moving in the private sector. A paid day off may exist, but only if the collective agreement or a company agreement provides for it. Check this point with your HR department; otherwise, you will need to take a regular day off.

Registration certificate, address change, and post-move formalities

Competing articles often list the formalities “to do before” the move. The period following the move-in is less documented, even though it concentrates strict deadline obligations.

Updating the registration certificate

The address on the registration certificate must be changed within a month following the move. The process is done online on the ANTS website. Ignoring this obligation exposes you to a fixed fine. It is a formality often forgotten because it does not block the daily use of the vehicle, but a roadside check or an accident can make it costly.

The online address change service and its limitations

The official online service allows you to notify several organizations in one go (taxes, health insurance, CAF). However, this system does not cover the bank, employer, home insurer, or private subscriptions. Believing that a single declaration is sufficient is a common mistake that leads to follow-ups, lost letters, and sometimes insurance coverage gaps.

The list of organizations to contact separately should be established as early as the week before the move:

  • Bank and credit organizations, to prevent statements or schedules from being sent to the old address
  • Home insurer, so that the new address is covered from the day the keys are handed over
  • Employer and mutual insurance, for updating pay slips and healthcare reimbursements
  • Energy suppliers and telecom operator, distinguishing between contract cancellation and transfer according to the provider of the new home

Sorting and boxes: what classic lists do not specify

Sorting your belongings before moving is universal advice. The difficulty lies in the method, not the principle. Starting the sorting process with the least used rooms (basement, attic, guest room) allows you to free up boxes and storage space without disrupting daily life.

Packing room by room while labeling each box by destination significantly reduces unloading time. A color code for each room (a simple piece of tape is enough) avoids having to read each label on moving day when fatigue accumulates.

The rarely addressed point concerns bulky items. Dismantlable furniture should be taken apart the night before, with the screws stored in a bag taped to the corresponding piece of furniture. Losing a bag of screws on moving day turns a twenty-minute reassembly into a trip to the hardware store.

Planning the route and moving day

Booking a moving slot outside of peak times (end of the month, school holidays, long weekends) reduces the cost of the service provider and the difficulty of finding a vehicle or available team. For a move without professionals, reserving the utility vehicle should be done several weeks in advance.

The route itself deserves verification: parking restrictions in front of the new home, access to the lift if the stairs are narrow, parking permission from the town hall if necessary. These logistical details, overlooked until the eve, can delay the operation by several hours.

  • Check the width of access points (front door, stairwell, elevator) and measure the bulkiest furniture before moving day
  • Prepare a bag of essentials (identity documents, medications, chargers, sheets, hygiene products) accessible without opening a single box
  • Photograph the water, gas, and electricity meters upon arrival to have a dated reading in case of disputes with the supplier

A smooth move relies on adhering to an administrative timeline as much as on material organization. Legal deadlines (registration certificate, notice, insurance) are non-negotiable, and financial assistance requires advance steps, often even before signing the lease or sales agreement. Checking your rights with the employer and public organizations before planning anything avoids unpleasant budget surprises the month following the move-in.
